What is inside an emergency bag? What is the inside of an emergency ambulance like? Open Days at the Faculty of Health Studies answered all such questions

A patient simulator which is wheezing or turns blue like a human being, whose blood is not sufficiently oxygenated. Human bodies like real, because they are real. Interactive methods of learning or actual weight of an emergency bag for advanced life support. The participants of Open Days at the Faculty of Health Studies of the Technical University of Liberec could experience all of that.

About a hundred of prospective students had a chance to take part in an event where the faculty presented itself. “I came all the way from the Vysocina Region. I went to Gaudeamus, an education exhibition in Prague, and got real interested in the study programmes and equipment presented by the faculty. I wanted to see it all in real. Moreover, my sister studies at the Faculty of Economics in Liberec and I know the Technical University offers the nicest Halls of Residence. That is why, I wish to study the Paramedic programme at the Technical University,” said Michaela Hořejší, a student of a grammar school, whose fire service logo on her T-shirt showed her love for the integrated rescue services. “I took part in various courses in the area of rescue work. Paramedic work is close to my heart,” she said.

Students of grammar schools as well as students of secondary medical schools made a significant group of future prospects. “I was deciding between the universities in Pardubice, Plzeň and Olomouc, but I would like to study in Liberec. It is closest to my home and the faculty got my interest. I also like the premises,” said Kateřina Jonová, a student of a secondary medical school in Trutnov.

During the introduction presentation, the participants got detailed information about the application process and enrolment, admission requirements or study programmes at the faculty. “We try to explain the core of our study programmes, what they consist of, what possibilities the graduates have once they complete them and who the programmes are suitable for. For example, the Paramedic study programme is very attractive for future students, but we try to explain to them that not everybody is fit to do it,” said Zuzana Paukertová, the Vice-Dean for Education.

After introducing the faculty, the future students were able to see the specialised equipment of the faculty. For example, they could see in detail a fully-equipped emergency ambulance, which the faculty uses for training purposes. It enables to simulate life-saving procedures. The supervisor can monitor remotely what the crew is doing through cameras placed inside the ambulance. “This interactive teaching method enables us to operate the patient simulator remotely and simulate various acute conditions, which the future paramedics can encounter during their training,” said Tomáš Dudich, the Assistant at the faculty.

There was also a virtual anatomy table, a patient simulator SIMMAN 3G, the LUCAS 3 chest compression system for indirect heart massage or plastinated bodies. The future students learned about the equipment used by the students of the study programmes offered by the faculty, which are: Paramedic, General Nursing, Radiological Assistance and Biomedical Engineering. The Laboratories of nursing techniques and Laboratories of functional diagnostics were open to the public and showed various medical tools and equipment.
